Featured book: Presentation Zen

It has been about one year ago when I featured the Presentation Zen blog of Garr Reynolds. Today it's his book, once again named Presentation Zen. Reading his blog is really interesting and helpful, but as always with online documents it's more a quick scanning instead a lasting learning. With books that's different, at least for me. Here I take more time for reading and internalize it more - this time again. Garr has very good informations, hints, and examples about preparing, designing, and presenting. I've already had the chance to test his hints. And yes, it's really working. Instead of masses of bullet point lists with only some graphics I now create smaller presentations, with a story, with less text and more images, and step by step I'm presenting it more gripping. I've even organized a cordless presenter to be more flexible in moving and interacting with the audience. I'm still by far not perfect, but now I have a great mind to present and teach more than I've done the last years.

Featured book: SOA in Practice

I've recently finished my reading of SOA in Practice by Nicolai Josuttis. Nicolai is an experienced software developer and architect who has helped to establish the SOAs at the major German telecommunication and mobile telecommunication companies. In SOA in Practice he's sharing his know-how made during those projects with the reader. And from the first moment you've got the feeling that this is no lengthy theoretical introduction. Instead the author uses many examples to demonstrate the pitfalls during the establishment and operation of SOA environments and how to evade them. A must-have book for any SOA architect.

Featured book: The Myths of Innovation

There are many thoughts and ideas about innovation. And there are also many myths. Now Scott Berkun has wrote his second book called The Myths of Innovation and bringing some light into the world of invention, development, and discovery. After reading this book many facts taken for granted are now viewed from a different angle. And the own mindset about innovation changes. So it's really worth reading.

Featured book: The Art of Program Management

I've just read the book The Art of Project Management by Scott Berkun, a former Microsoft project manager and now working as a consultant and author. It is full of plain experience, covers all the important areas if you're responsible for software projects, and doesn't slays you with information overload and too much formalism. A must read for software project managers.

Other interesting places to look are his site and his blog.
