Day 14 - Finished the painting

The painting of the door frames is done, another step in our renovation. Tomorrow the craftsmen will continue their work. The wallpapering of the kitchen will be completed and the radiators will be installed. Due to my journey to Berlin tomorrow I'll write about it on tuesday.

Beside all the renovation my Erlang development hasn't stopped. I've continued the implementation of a fist service for the CELLMB using Mnesia, In principle everything works fine, but I'm still missing one thing in my implementation - the management of complex event-driven processes. So I've started to think about a more general successor of the CELLMB. It will be called CELEAS - the Tideland CEL Events and Services. You can read more about it in my wiki at Google Code.

Day 13 - Lots of painting

Today we've finished the first painting of the radiators. Now I've only got to wait until the where installed again and then do the last fixes. Additionally we've done the first paintings of the door frames. We'll finish that tomorrow and the doors themselves later. Nothing real exciting, but good work. *smile*

Day 11 - Kitchen has been tiled

Today our kitchens has been tiled, it really looks great. Now we can really imagine how it will look like. Also the ceiling in the kitchen has been wallpapered and painted in the sleeping room, the living room, and the corridor. We really can't await it.

And another real good news: Germany has reached the semi-final of the UEFA European Football Championship. *smile*

Day 10 - It's getting closer

Today the bricklayers made a good job finishing the floor and rendering the rest of the walls and the pillars. The painter wallpapered the corridor and I finished my second radiator and started the third one. So if you walk through the rooms it's now really good to imagine, how it will look like when it's done.

Day 9 - Floor finish done

The most important work today has been the floor finish in our kitchen. So now the floor is even enough for the tiles. Additionally the cables have been rendered and the isolation behind the radiators have been improved. The painters continued the priming of the kitchen and the corridor. Tomorrow the rest of the kitchen will be rendered.

Day 8 - Mostly the painters

Today the most work has been done by the painters. They wallpapered the sleeping room and the living room and done the priming of parts of the kitchen. Additionally they prepared the radiator niches. The bricklayer checked the floor of the kitchen for the floor finish. Tomorrow they will continue rendering the walls in the kitchen.

While Carmi made her first attempts to bring some order back into our home I've finished the painting of the first radiator and painted the second one the first time.

Now we're sitting on our bed and watching soccer between Germany and Austria during the UEFA European Football Championship. Currently Germany is leading 1:0.

Day 7 - Weekend, so only the radiators

We really needed this weekend. Sleeping long, eating lunch at the Italian restaurant PaneVino, a walk through the park, and after all having an ice. The only thing we've done has been the preparation of most of the radiators and the painting of one of them. Tomorrow I'll continue, as well as the craftsmen. So I'll show new pictures tomorrow.

Day 6 - Time for something complete different

OK, also today we've done a bit for our renovation. We prepared the first radiators for painting and will continue tomorrow. But the most time we've gone shopping, had a BBQ, and have been visited by my sister and her husband.

But yesterday I've read about the new release 4.0 of PLT Scheme. So I've visited the site and once again I've been fascinated of the Scheme style. Even if I'm currently preferring Erlang for my work, I like the Scheme syntax more. But I also like the keyword arguments of Smalltalk. So my favorite language should be a mix of those three. Concurrency, distribution, pattern-matching, and non-modifiable variables from Erlang, the syntax like Scheme, and arguments in the style of Smalltalk. This could look like

(define (insert customer: Customer into-database: Database)
(let ((PCustomer (prepare customer: Customer))
(OpenDatabase (open database: Database)))
(...)))

Now one question would be, how pattern-matching would look like. And message sending and receiving. Erlang tuples could just also be lists. But I also would need atoms. And at last I would like Smalltalks closures more than funs and lambdas.

(map fun: (|item: Item| (print Item)) on-list: MyList)

I'll never implement such a language, but it's fun to think about it.

Day 5 - Almost weekend

Today the painter has wallpapered the ceilings of the sleeping room and the living room, the electrician finished his preparing work and now has to wait for the bricklayers, and the plumber has deinstalled the radiators. Now they’ve got their well-earned weekend while we have to paint the radiators.

Thursday, 12 June 2008

Day 4 - Only small steps

Today only small steps have been done. The painter finished the preparation of the living room and the sleeping room, the electrician installed new power lines and light switches, and the plumber relocated the water supply. He has to finish his work tomorrow. Additionally he'll remove four radiators so that the painter can work behind them and we can paint them.

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Day 3 - The constructive phase started

Yeah, it really goes on. All wallpapers are teared down, also the tiles and the parquet are removed as well as the kitchen is enlarged and the new sleeping room has its door and new wall. The painters started with the priming and the bricklayers started with the rendering of the new reinforcement. Additionally the electrician started to install new sockets and light switches. Now we're awaiting the plumber to relocate the water supplies and the carpenter for the new door of the sleeping room.

Tuesday, 10 June 2008

Day 2 - Wow, how fast they are

The second day is over, the kitchen is now one large room, with a total new light through the second window. The first impression is great. I can't await the delivery of the new furniture, even if it's still three weeks away.

Additionally the new wall between the sleeping room and the living room is installed and the hole for the door has been broken through the wall. So more daylight reaches the corridor and it's a totally new feeling.

It's fantastic how fast the caftsmen work. And they do a really tough job. The old wallpapers in the living room are painted several times with latex color. So it's really hard work to remove it.

Day 1 - The first wallpapers are teared down

Today the painters started their work and removed the first wallpapers. They are really fast. I don't want to think about how much time we would need to have the same result as they achieved today. Tomorrow the rest will be teared off as well as the parquet and the carpet.

Additionally the bricklayers will start tomorrow and tear down the first wall to enlarge our new kitchen. So I'm curious what pictures I'll take then.

Day 0 - Rooms are empty

Last week our renovation to enlarge the kitchen and to rearrange some rooms has started. Carmen emptied the cabinets, this weekend we stored our furniture. So now the kitchen, the old bureau, and the living-dining room are empty. We are ready for the craftsmen.
